About

Goward House is an activity centre for seniors fifty-five and over in Cadboro Bay, Victoria, BC. It is located in a 1908 heritage home tucked among gardens, arbutus and douglas fir. The choir is non-auditioned and has about 40 members. We sing popular songs from the 20's to the 70's. Practices are at Goward House and performances are in various senior's residences around Victoria. We do about 20 concerts each year. Would you like to join?

Say Hello!

If you're interested in joining the choir or even just 'sitting in' to see what it's like, drop us a line. We'd love to hear from you.

We have an 'intake' of new members during January and September but you can drop in to see us during any practice.

What we do

We sing for fun. Practices should be fun and concerts should be fun too .

Now, that doesn't mean we don't work hard. Practices are every Friday from 1:15 to 3:15 during January, February and March. Concerts are one hour long on every Friday afternoon (times vary) during April, May and June. We normally finish our season with the Goward House Strawberry Tea in the middle of June.

We continue with our year in September, practicing until the end of October (8 weeks) and then do a series of concerts (7) until just before Christmas.

We practice and perform using sheet music. Occasionally we sing 'off book' but it's the exception. Your package of music is given to you when you join and we'd like it back when the season is over. You keep it from week to week and can use it to listen to practice files on the website. Practicing between rehearsals isn't mandatory but it can make the choir experience much more enjoyable.

Concerts are at various senior's residences around Victoria — anywhere from Langford to Sidney. We have a good time and so does the audience.

How the choir works

Goward House is a Saanich Senior's (over 55) Recreation facility and the Goward House Singers is one of their many programs. To join the choir (following a trial period to see if you like us) it is necessary to join the Goward House Society. The cost for that is $110 per year and your membership lasts for a year from initial payment date.

Each of the activities at Goward House require an activity fee. These 2 fees (society & activity) are what funds the running of the facility. Once you are a member of the Society you can be involved with any of the programs offered simply by paying the activity fee. Activity Tickets are $4.00 and can be purchased at the front desk - generally in batches of 10.

A choir isn't anything without a really good pianist and we have a great one. Of course greatness isn't free and we collect a 'pianist' fee each week to fund our accompanist. The cost is whatever you'd like to give and it is a volunteer payment. We don't want anyone not joining because of financial reasons.

What we sing

We sing an interesting variety of pieces that you'll remember and the audience will love.

Some of the songs we are singing this coming season are:

Almost Like Being In Love

I Wish You Love

They All Laughed

Save the Last Dance for Me

Love Me Tender

You're Just In Love - An Irving Berlin song from 1950

The Summer Wind - made famous by Frank Sinatra

I'm Beginning to See the Light

Wild Mountain Thyme
